Summit Mourns Slain Restaurant Worker

Murders are a rare thing in Summit, NJ. That is what makes the inexplicable killing of 47-year-old father-of-four Abelino Mazariego by a group of teens all the more shocking.

Details from NBC New York:

Mazariego, a native of El Salvador, finished his shift as a cook’s assistant at Dabbawalla Indian restaurant in Summit, N.J., and took a seat on a bench in the Summit Promenade, prosecutors claim.

A pack of teenagers approached him, and two started to beat him, prosecutors say. One recorded the attack. The second attacker, a 17-year-old, was also arrested; the teen who got it all on tape has not been charged.

Colin Crasto, manager and chef at Dabbawalla, said the fact that the beating was taped “makes it more horrific.” Crasto added that he’s never felt unsafe in the area, and that teens hang out outside in the summer just like anywhere else.

“We are totally shocked at what happened,” said Crasto.

Police then found Mazariego with severe head trauma and took him to Overlook Hospital in Summit. He never regained consciousness and died three days later, according to the New Jersey Local News Service.

Hello Summit!

Welcome to Summit Peace, a creation of Grateful Dread Peace Media, a nonprofit community service endeavor whose primary goal is to inform the public and inspire progressive-peace citizen action for a better world. We’ve been doing this since 1996, when GDPM was founded in Baltimore, Maryland, and under the name ALL FACTS AND OPINIONS. Now, we reside in Summit, New Jersey, and man oh man, we are thrilled to pieces to continue our worldchanging mission here.

I’m your host, Natalie Davis, a journalist, broadcaster, author, speaker, organizer and activist who has been in the peace/social justice arena practically from the womb. My relationship with Summit goes back two decades, when I married a Jersey boy born and bred here.  Having spent a good bit of time here over the years, I’ve loved Summit for a long time. Finally living here feels as natural to me as breathing. This is a beautiful community of fine people, so it makes sense to share my life’s mission with them.

The idea behind Summit Peace (subtitled All Facts and Opinions) is simple: Here, we present all sorts of material of interest to people committed to peace, the environment, and progressive values. As the site develops, you’ll see news items, resource links, event info, counterculture stuff (hey, we are everywhere!) and more. Some of what we share will be serious, some will be silly, some will be stuff I think is just plain cool… I hope you will find it informative, interesting, inspiring, and (when appropriate) perhaps a wee bit humorous or fun. One never knows; I certainly don’t.  You’ll have to visit us to know. But I see this as a chance to fix a broken world while building community with likeminded souls — and wouldn’t it be groovy to have Summit’s progressive-minded citizens come together? Just think of the good we could do and the camaraderie we could share.

Now, if you’ve read AF&O for years, no worries. We’ll still cover the same stuff and with more regularity, so this is a win for all involved. I so appreciate your past support and hope you’ll stick around for our future. Bottom line: We have a world to save, and that’s going to take folks in Baltimore, Summit, New York, the Bay Area, Chicago, London, Paris, Munich, Madrid, Johannesburg, Tokyo… you get the idea.

Please join us regularly and tell your friends. Be sure to follow @summitpeace on Twitter as well as the nationally focused @allfactsandopin Twitter, which will continue as is. And do peace — that’s what it’s all about.

Pax vobiscum!

Californians Against Hate Target Northeast US

This release comes from my friend Fred Karger in CA:

Designed to counter the commercial released last week by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) “A Gathering Storm,” Californians Against Hate will launch its own advertising campaign beginning tomorrow in: New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Delaware, Rhode Island and Maine.
“We believe that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) established the National Organization for Marriage as its front group in order to qualify Proposition 8 for ballot last year in California,” said Fred Karger, Founder of Californians Against Hate. “After spending several million dollars in California, NOM recently moved into 7 Northeast States considering marriage equality.

They lost in Vermont on April 7th, when the Legislature voted to override Governor Jim Douglas’ veto the very next day. Vermont became the 4th state in the nation to allow same-sex couples the right to marry.

NOM was very active in Vermont, paying for a massive advertising campaign, including radio, direct mail and robo-calling everyone in the state with a recorded message. Political experts think that their heavy–handed tactics backfired, and they lost because of it. Now NOM is charging into 6 more Northeast states.

So today, April 18th, on the 234th anniversary of Paul Revere’s famous midnight ride from Boston to Lexington, we will begin our online advertising campaign. Our ad harkens back to 1775 when a brave Paul Revere rode his horse to warn of the attack by the British. We wrote our own version of Longfellow’s famous poem “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere,” entitled, “The Mormons are Coming, The Mormons are Coming!” It’s easy to find and enjoy.

“Our modern day Paul Revere is warning of TV commercials (using bad actors trying to play real people), radio ads, and robo–calls — all full of deceit and lies,” said Fred Karger. “Their ads are fueled by millions of dollars, which we believe comes primarily from the Mormon Church and its members. They set up NOM as a front group in California in the summer of 2007 to qualify Proposition 8 for the ballot, after 2 previous attempts to put a Constitutional Amendment to ban same-sex marriage before the voters failed in 2006. We are very familiar with the National Organization for Marriage and its president, Maggie Gallagher. We sparred with them a lot in last year in California.”

“The ad that we are running is meant to be strong, but lighthearted, “added Karger. “We want all fair-minded people to know who is behind NOM’s effort to stop equal rights. We will continue to pound away at this front group until everyone knows exactly who is behind the creation of the National Organization for Marriage.”

The Mormon Church has been fighting same-sex marriage this way since 1995, when it set up Hawaii’s Future Today to fight gay marriage in that state. Mormon Church documents that we received recently show just how the Church operates. To see these documents go to our web site:http://mormongate.com/document1.html

Let the Voter Disenfranchisement Begin…

Found this story, dated 9/30 at Brad Blog and this is serious stuff. Please, if you’re not registered to vote, get to it. If you are registered, make sure you are still on the rolls. Get it done before someone takes your vote. As CBS reported last week, in 19 states, including Maryland, the purge of voters is under way.

[The Sept. 30] CBS Evening News finally covered what may well be the November Surprise that we’ve been trying to warn about for monthshere at The BRAD BLOG: Massive voter roll purges being done in secret, with little or no oversight, and often under federal Justice Department cover, in states and counties around the country.

And the Democrats, who likely have the most to lose via such secret purges, are doing little or nothing about it.

The CBS story, posted below (appx 2 mins) starts with an elderly New Jersey voter who was suddenly removed from the voting rolls after thirty years, for apparently no reason whatsoever, before launching into findings from a new non-partisan Brennan Center for Justice study on “Voter Purges”.

We’ve yet to read this Brennan report, but the brief coverage from tonight’s Evening News notes 10,000 voters purged in Mississippi, 21,000 in Louisiana and “to top it off, another new study discovered 19 states are ignoring federal law (the National Voter Registration Act), banning systematic purges within 90 days of a federal election.”

Among those 19 are a number of battleground states. The report lists: Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Masachusetts, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas and Washington, as places where massive purges have recently taken place.

CBS ends by noting that their New Jersey voter has now been restored to the rolls, but they warn, “come Election Day, don’t count on thousands of others being as fortunate”…

In other words, get to it. Rock the Vote can help get you registered and to verify your current registration. Time is of the essence. Voter deadlines are coming up fast.
