Google Says No to Anti-gay Hate & Proposition 8

Web behemoth Google takes a definitive stand on the issue of marriage equality in California:

As an Internet company, Google is an active participant in policy debates surrounding information access, technology and energy. Because our company has a great diversity of people and opinions — Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, all religions and no religion, straight and gay — we do not generally take a position on issues outside of our field, especially not social issues. So when Proposition 8 appeared on the California ballot, it was an unlikely question for Google to take an official company position on.

However, while there are many objections to this proposition — further government encroachment on personal lives, ambiguously written text — it is the chilling and discriminatory effect of the proposition on many of our employees that brings Google to publicly oppose Proposition 8. While we respect the strongly-held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality. We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 — we should not eliminate anyone’s fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love.

Way to go! What a boost it is to see a huge corporation take a stand for what is right. VERY glad I downloaded my new Google Chrome browser now.

  1. The future of society is at a crossroads here with Prop 8.

Men and women are different. That diversity is important. Each brings unique approach to raising kids and future generations. Removing gender will change the focus of marriage and why we promote it. This isn’t about 2 people in love, nor about “benefits”; that’s Domestic Partnerships. No need to destroy the purpose of marriage for a stamp of approval for personal choices of a few. Prop 8 isn’t about “rights”. Everyone is man or woman. All have right of marriage of man/woman. Some have no interest in that, their choice. But it is intolerant for them to demand redefinition for the rest. Changing it to include any combo of genders weakens marriage. Gays can live as they want. But society needs to promote marriage of man/woman, because it is critical for the future survival of society, enough that 4 judges ruling by fiat must not be allowed to override the will of the people on defining this most vital foundational institution of society. 2. I doubt your friends would read this blog. Do you make a habit of spreading hate propaganda on progressive blogs and sites? A warning: This is my site and I will not have pleas for discriminatory legislation here, so please forgive me but the offending words from your comment must go and will go. I am not a government agency. My kids read this. I’m allowed to censor. Though I don’t have equality in your country — and you prefer me to be unequal — I am the boss here. Don’t like it? Don’t come back.

Now, I say this with all sincerity. Thanks for responding. Though I find your message brutal, heartless, and against everything Jesus ever said, you certainly are entitled to your opinion and to express it. But that is all it is — your opinion. Your definition of marriage’s purpose comes from your religious tradition. However repugnant and un-Christian I find your views, I would never seek to make you unequal under law.

At any rate, that’s your view on marriage. If that’s the view of your religious institution, fine — keep it in your church, please, and away from decent people. And for the love of God — yours, mine, or Gilgamesh’s — keep that dangerous talk away from my children! I have a family to protect, and unlike you, mine is subject to government persecution and discrimination based on your church’s rules. My job is to protect my kids and those I love from people who think like you.

Frankly, misguided fellow child of the creator, the fact that you wish to use CIVIL LAW, WHICH IS SECULAR, to punish gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people shows YOU to be the intolerant one. Thank goodness being Christian means forgiven, because you are so deep in sin and you don’t even know… I can’t wait until the day God reveals her truth about justice to you.

As I do not debate bigots anymore (far too old for that crap and there are more productive things to do), I have stated my thoughts and you have stated yours. Go with… whomever. Peace to you and NO ON THE TOTALLY UN-AMERICAN PROP 8!

Sonamerica — you are in my prayers, you poor thing.
